We walk away from them quickly
Those worthless bastards
Begging for our change and table scraps
How dare they interrupt our coffee
How dare they interrupt our phone calls and texts
How dare they be alive
How can you have a dog when you don’t have a home?
Eat your dog or it’s food
It’s what you deserve
Get a job!
They must be on drugs
They must be thieves
They are just as alive as you and I
How often do we walk by someone asking for change?
How often do we regard them as addicts, thieves, and con-men?
How often do we really care?
Forget civic duty
Forget the basic human rights and needs
Forget kindness
Have we really forgotten what it’s like to be afraid and alone?
Have we forgotten what it’s like to have someone be kind to us?
Have we forgotten what it’s like to be human?
Smile
Give
Live
All the while a nation of God…
