On Any Given Sunday

On Any Given Sunday

Any given Sunday before we met I would sit on the terrace sipping coffee
quietly while watching the cars fly up and down my street
Things weren’t always quiet but the coffee was always perfect
As black as the shadows on the western side of Mt. Hood as the sun rises
Some mornings my coffee grew cold too quickly but I happily finished it
So many miles and memories away
What would you change if you could?
That was any given Sunday before we met I was thrilled in an odd way, too strange to really explain,
when I found out you enjoyed your coffee the same way I did It was an easier time for us then
That was before all the dreads of life and overthinking took us away from that
morning coffee on any given Sunday as we sat at the kitchen table staring off into the distance A
lone but together
Often that quiet morning interrupted by your tiny dog barking at a bird or a tree branch or her own shadow
What would you change if you could?
On any given Sunday had we not met my life would have continued in its own stew of
overthinking that led to nowhere except  back to that terrace watching the cars
Wishing I could meet someone like you before I knew you
Before a world of indifference and the stress of wondering if we could know any better
Or anything more than today
But really, what would you change if you could?
On any given Sunday before we met I’d rush away to do nothing
so I didn’t have to be around for anything
But this change
The change on this Sunday
It doesn’t make the rain fall and tears couldn’t be found,
even though there wasn’t a dry eye in the theatre if my mind
So many differences on any given Sunday I’d spent with you since we met
Any given Sunday since we left what really wasn’t I’ll sit here in my room
sipping cold coffee pretending we’re better off and pretending I don’t miss you
I won’t wonder where you are or what went wrong
because sometimes it’s all or nothing
As the cars race up and down the streets
On any given Sunday
